ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 1580 http://www.s-gabriel.org/1580 ************************************ 06 Apr 1999 From: Jodi McMaster Greetings from the Academy of S. Gabriel! You wrote inquiring whether there was any documentable masculine name that sounds similar to , preferably Italian and from between the years 1400 and 1600 A.D. Before I start, I'd like to clarify the service that the Academy offers. We try to help Societyfolk in choosing and using names that fit the historical cultures they are trying to re-create. Our research can sometimes be used to support submissions to the College of Arms, but that it not our goal and our results are often incompatible with the College's needs. If your main goal is to register a particular name, then we may not be able to help you. We did not find any given names sounding like . We were able to find the Italian surnames and , both based on the place name. [1]. We also found the Italian descriptive byname 'ill-shaped'. [2] In Italian, means 'malt' and 'malt house', so is a plausible byname indicating the bearer is a maltster. is 'bad' and 'late', so is a possible construct for a name meaning 'slow, lazy, tardy, slow-witted'. We believe that a name like or would be a fine choice for a late-period Italian. There are some possible bynames in French as well, although they are no closer to than the Italian suggestions. If you are interested in these, please write and let us know. For Italian given names, you may want to look at 4300 Citizen of Pisa, 1228, by Enrica Salvatori.
