Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel!

You asked for information about the Ukrainian surname <Umrysh>.  Here is
what we have found.

We were not able to find the origin of this name.  It might be related to
the modern Russian word <umirit'> "to pacify, placate".  The ending <-ysh>
appears in modern Russian words such as <malysh> "little one, child", so
<Umrysh> might be a diminutive meaning something like "little peaceful one,
little quiet one".  However, this is all guesswork.  <Umrysh> may also be a
non-Russian name, Tartar, Central Asian, or even Turkic.  We have very
little information about names from those cultures.
