You asked whether is an appropriate name for a Basque woman in our period. Here is what we have found. (with an rather than an ) is the Spanish feminine form of a , the name of an early Roman martyr [1]. It may have been used by Basques, but it is not a Basque-origin name. We have not found a period example of this name in Spain, but we think it's a plausible choice at least for very late in our period. A form of the name was used in late 16th century Italy, and a character named appeared in a Spanish play in 1622 [2, 3]. is a village in the Basque region. It derives from a Basque word that means "burned", which appears in other place names in this spelling as early as 1025 [4]. itself is recorded in 1366 and in the 16th century [5, 6]. Before the 16th century, we believe the surname would have been spelled . In the 16th century, it could or ; note that the apostrophe is a post-period addition. seems to be a plausible late-period name from the Basque region. However, we have no evidence that was actually used there.
