This is one of the Academy's earliest reports. We are not confident that these early reports are accurate. Please use it with caution.

Greetings,

This is the information we have on how to find a list of all names and coats of arms used in Ireland.

The question you've asked can never be definitively answered, since there is no way even to know all names used in Ireland throughout history. It would be the work of a lifetime to compile information on even the most common names used in Ireland.

Luckily there are people who devote their lives to this research, and we can use the results of their work. The most prolific author on this topic is Edward MacLysaght, who has numerous books on this topic. The most useful ones are "Irish Families: Their Names, Arms and Origins" and "More Irish Families." This will provide a start to the answers you're looking for.

You should be aware that not all members of a family are entitled to use the "family arms." For more information on this, please consult our Web page on this topic:

Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn, Angus Scrymgeour, Rouland Carre, and Arval d'Espas Nord contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
