ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 1995 http://www.s-gabriel.org/1995 ************************************ From: "Sara L Friedemann" 28 Feb 2000 Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You wanted to know how the Welsh masculine name was pronounced between 1250-1400, and if the Latin spelling was found any earlier than the 14th century. Here is a brief letter with the information we have found. A copy of the previous report that we sent you can be found here: http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi?1947 was most likely pronounced \ay-dhan\ or \EYE-dhan\, where \EYE\ is identical to the word "eye," and the \dh\ was pronounced like in , not . While it is possible that was used earlier than the 14th century, we have found no specific instances of it. We recommend that you only consider using if you also put the rest of your name into Latin; a person's name would have been spoken in Welsh or written in Latin, but the two languages would not have been combined in one form of the name. If you would like to know what the completely Latin form of your name might be, please write again, and we'll be happy to help. We hope that this brief letter has been useful to you, and that you will not hesitate to write again if any part was unclear or if you have further questions. Research and commentary on this letter was provided by Talan Gwynek and Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn. For the Academy, ~Aryanhwy merch Catmael, February 28, 2000
