ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 2042 http://www.s-gabriel.org/2042 ************************************ 9 Jun 2000 From: (Josh Mittleman) Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You asked for sources for finding a late-period Berber feminine name. Unfortunately, we've been able to find very little on that subject. In general, naming patterns in late-period North Africa were similar to those in other parts of the Islamic world: Arabic names and naming practices were common. You can read a brief discussion of Arabic naming practices on the web: Arabic Naming Practices and Names List http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/daud/arabic-naming The same article appears in Compleat Anachronist #51. We've found a few women's names native to North Africa [1]: Sut Tamu Ta'zunt Urtatim or Urtatlim Yanduza Zannu Zarru We've identified a book that may be useful if you want to do further research on Berber names:_North-African names from Latin sources_, by J. Jongeling (Leiden, The Netherlands: Research School CNWS, 1994; ISBN 9073782252). We haven't seen the book, so we can't say for sure that it will be helpful. If you do research this subject further, please let us know: We'd be grateful for your help in assisting our future clients. We hope this letter has been useful. Please write us again if any part of it has been unclear or if you have other questions. I was assisted in researching and writing this letter by Pedro de Alcazar, Juliana de Luna, Raquel Buenaventura, Julie Stampnitzky, and Talan Gwynek.
