Here is the information we found on the name "Balin."

We were unable to find any evidence for the existence of the name "Balin" in the Middle Ages.

The closest we came was an Arthurian character whose known as "Balin" in English versions and as "Balain" in French. This character appears in a number of medieval Arthurian stories. There are examples of people who were named after fictional characters in medieval romances (including Roland and Lancelot), so it is conceivable that a medieval person could have been named after Balain the character. However, the only characters whose names were definitely given to real people were heroes of their own romances, while Balain was a secondary character.

You may want to consider the name "Balian," which is documented as a French given name from the 12th century. This name is very similar, and was definitely used by actual people.

Arval D'Espas Nord, Pedro de Alcazar, Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn, and Rouland Carre contributed to this letter
