ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 2097 http://www.s-gabriel.org/2097 ************************************ 26 Jun 2000 From: (Josh Mittleman) Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You asked for help choosing a period Turkish name. In particular, you asked how Turkish women's names were constructed, to what extent they incorporated Arabic elements into them, and whether the modern Turkish given name was used in period. Unfortunately, we cannot answer any of these questions: We do not have enough information about period Turkish naming. You also asked if we knew anything about period Persian names. We do not. As we noted earlier, we have offered previous clients some limited information on Turkish names. We provided a short list of period women's names from medieval Turkish sources in this report http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi?1907 and a list of books that might be useful in further research in this one http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi?357 Both the Turks and the Persians adopted Islam long before the end of our period, and many Arabic names came into use in both cultures; so the best suggestion we can make for choosing an authentic name is to pick a typical Arabic name and hope that it is appropriate. We hope this letter has been useful. Please write us again if any part of it has been unclear or if you have other questions. I was assisted in researching and writing this letter by Antonio Miguel Santos de Borja, Talan Gwynek, Sion Andreas, and Da'ud ibn Auda. For the Academy, Arval Benicoeur 26 Jun 2000
