ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 2436 http://www.s-gabriel.org/2436 ************************************ 4 Jan 2002 From: (Josh Mittleman) Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You asked whether is an appropriate name for a 14th century German. Here is what we have found. is an unusual spelling of a name that appears most often as , , or in the 13th to 15th centuries. We have found only one instance of in 1352 and one of (with an umlaut on the 'A') in 1396 [1, 2, 3]. This diminutive of appears to have been used in all Upper German dialects, making it appropriate anywhere in the southern half (roughly) of the German-speaking world. All of the spellings we found, except , represent roughly the pronunciation \EN-dehr-lin\. We can't recommend using the exceptional spelling as good re-creation; one of the other spellings would be a better choice. However we can't rule out as a possibility for your period. or "hunter" is a spelling generally found later than your period. The more typical spelling in the 14th century is ; we find that form recorded in Bohemia 1411 and in other parts of southern Germany in the late 13th and 14th centuries [4, 5]. However, we have also found an example of in Baden in southwestern Germany in 1280, and in Austria in 1365 [6]. In either spelling the name was pronounced roughly \YEH-gehr\. We recommend as the most likely form of the name you've chosen, fine throughout the 14th century in the southern parts of Germany oand Austria. is another fine spelling for the given name; , which represents another pronunciation, is less well-supported and so not as good a choice. is also a reasonable spelling for the surname. In your question, you wrote that you were looking for a copy of Bahlow's book to support your submission. You needn't worry: You can use our report as support for your submission. Just include it with all the headers and footers. We hope this letter has been useful. Please write us again if any part of it has been unclear or if you have other questions.
