The classical Greek name came into use in England in the late 16th century and was fairly common in the 17th century. We have found it as 1583 and 1590 in Chesham [1, 2, 3]. Our Medieval Names Archive contains several large lists of 16th century English surnames; you can find them from http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/eng1450to1600.shtml In this period, the English used inherited family names, much as we do today. If you have further questions, please write again.
