Greetings,

Your request for a badge for your Web page caused a lot of discussion among our group. We like your idea, and there were several opinions about the most effective way for you to use armory.

"Badges" as they're ususally used in the SCA aren't really period. In the Middle Ages, there was no badge for "heralds," "seneschals" or official groups. Individual guilds and colleges sometimes had their own coats of arms, and if your group is going to take the form of one of these medieval groups than it might make sense for your group to have arms. But if your group isn't going to resemble a medieval organization, then, from a historical point of view, it doesn't make sense for your group to have arms.

Given that, the question is, "what kind of period model, if any, will your group simulate?" Once you know that, the next question is, "what kind of armory, if any, did those groups have?" Only then can we start to look at the details of the armory you're going to have. If it turns out that your group isn't of a type that would have arms, you could display the arms of the SCA (a green laurel wreath on yellow), which can be displayed by any SCA-related person or entity.

So if you can pass on some information about your group and possible medieval analogues to it, we can start to get an idea about arms for your group. If you aren't sure about what possible medieval models you might want to imitate, we can try and see what we can come up with.

Arval D'Espas Nord, Effric neyn Kenyeoch vc Ralte, Angus Scrymgeour, Sionainn Padraig Caimbeu, Pedro de Alcazar, and Tangwstyl verch Morgant Glasvryn contributed to this letter.

I hope this has been helpful, and that we can continue to work with you. We were impressed by your project, and would very much like to contribute to it in any way we can.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
