ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 3208 http://www.s-gabriel.org/3208 ************************************ 15 Nov 2006 From: Aryanhwy merch Catmael Greetings from the Academy of S. Gabriel! You wanted to know if a form of was used in Sweden between 1150 and 1350, but specifically in the 13th century. Here is what we have found. was originally a German name [4], which was then imported to the Scandinavian countries. Outside of the examples of the Latinized form , dated to 1232, that you found, the only Swedish examples of that we found are from after your period. [2] In late 14th and early 15th century records from Kalmar in the south-east of Sweden, we find the spellings and . Additionally, the Latin form was sometimes used to represent the native Norse name . [1] (Here, <{dh}> represents the letter edh, which looks like a backwards <6> with a cross-bar.) The name appears in Denmark slightly earlier. In Denmark, we find a man recorded as in 1313 and in 1317 and 1318. Another man, named , from 1344, appears to be the first man's nephew. We also found again in 1314, and sometime between 1334 and 1366. [3] Additionally, the name was known in Norway from the 1300s on, in the spelling (among others). [5] Based on this, or is probably a fine choice for early 14th-century Sweden. We hope that this letter has been useful to you and that you won't hesitate to write us again if any part was unclear or if you have further questions. Research and commentary on this letter was provided by Mari neyn Brian, Talan Gwynek, and Maridonna Benvenuti.
