Some of the Academy's early reports contain errors that we haven't yet corrected. Please use it with caution.

Greetings,

Here's the information we found about your desired name, something in Welsh that means "Owen the Left-Handed."

The Welsh name "chwith" (prounounced "khoo-ith," with a "throat-clearing" noise like the "ch" in German or Gaelic) means "left-handed" or "awkward." It's one of the most common medieval Welsh bynames. "Owen Chwith" would be a very likely name for almost any period. Its spelling varied over time; we could find an appropriate spelling if you're interested in a specific period.

By the way, we found out that "ceárr," the Gaelic word for "left-handed," apparently isn't the basis for the name "Kerr." Although we aren't sure of the origin of "Kerr," it appears to have originated from a place-name.

Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn, Elsbeth Ann Ross, and Effric neyn Kenyeoch vc Ralte contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
