Academy of Saint Gabriel Report 347

This report is available at http://www.s-gabriel.org/347

Some of the Academy's early reports contain errors that we haven't yet corrected. Please use it with caution.

Here's the information we found on the name "Dightman."

Actually we had a difficult time finding any information on this name in the Scottish and English sources we checked. We assume that "Dightman" is an undocumented form of some other name; the problem is that we can't be sure what other name that might be. We have a number of possiblities:

In Scotland, we found a reference to a "John of Dychtmunt" from 1524; this name could have evolved into a modern "Dightman."

In Middle English, we found the words "dihten" (to set in order), "dihtnare" (steward), and "di3tere" (governor--the "3" stands for a letter which is no longer used in English). It's possible that "Dightman" is related to one or more of these words. It's concievable that "Dightman" could also be a form of the name "Dikeman," which we found in 1206.

Brian Scott and Heather Rose Jones contributed to this letter.

We hope that this has been helpful, and that we can continue to assist you.

Sincerely,
Alan Terlep
