Greetings,

Here's the information we were able to give you about the name "Mustafa ibn Naji al-Hijasi" as an early Arabic name. The short answer is that your name is a completely accurate early Islamic name.

"Mustafa" was thought to be a nickname of the Prophet Muhammad, and has been a popular name among Muslims for that reason. Although we don't have a specific date for it, it was almost certainly in wide use by the 9th century. Since Muhammad himself had this name, it can be dated to before 600.

A man named "Abu Najih" (meaning "Najih's father") died in Mecca in 749. (1) From this we can conclude that "Naji" was used at least by this time.

The "Hijaz" was named by the time of Muhammad, before 600. In Arabic, a person from the Hijaz would be called "al-Hijazi." (this is also transliterated as "al-Hijasi.")

So, the name "Mustafa ibn Naji al-Hijazi" is totally accurate for your period and for later periods in Arab history.

Talan Gwynek, Da'ud ibn Auda, and Arval Benicouer contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful, and that we can continue to assist you.
