Greetings,
Here's the information we found on the name "McClellan."
There are many recorded forms of "McClellan." (1)
- Gilbert M'Lolane 1305 (noted as the earliest record of the surname)
- Gillebertus MacLelan Galvediensis (of Galloway, 1325)
- Matthew and Gilbert McLolan 1347
- Cane McGillolane 1359
- Gilbert McGillolane t. David II
- Gylbert Mclolane 1367
- Ingeram M'Gillelan 1372
- John Maklolayn 1381
- Maclelane 1424
- Donald Maklellane 1457
- Henry M'Lelann 1457
- John Maclellan 1466
- John M'Lelane 1466
- M'Lellane 1471
- Maghellen 1478
- M'Lelen 1484
- McClelan 1509
- Maklellane 1512
- Makellane 1512
- McCleilane 1522
- Donland Mclalan 1592
- John Mac Donoquhy Mac Lelandis 1596
- M'Cleallane 1605
Based on these forms, we would say that "McClellan" or "McLellan"
would be appropriate after 1425 or so. However, "Mc" is generally
more rare than "Mac" or "M'" in period Scots records.
