Academy of Saint Gabriel Report 392

This report is available at http://www.s-gabriel.org/392

Some of the Academy's early reports contain errors that we haven't yet corrected. Please use it with caution.

Here's the information we found on the Gaelic name "Callaghan."

"Callaghan" is the Anglicized form of the Gaelic name "O/ Ceallacháin" (where "á" is an accented "a"). This name means "(male) descendant of Ceallachán." (1) If you're interested in genealogical research, you should be aware that modern Irish women often use "Ní Cheallacháin." The "Ní" is a contraction of the older "inghean uí," meaning "daughter of the (male) descendant of."

Brian Scott, Sharon Krossa, Madawc Caradawg, and Heather Rose Jones contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful.

Sincerely,
Alan Terlep
