Greetings,

"Cormac mac Airt" is a period name. In fact, it's the name of an extremely famous Irish king who is one of the great figures of Irish legend.

The most likely spelling of this name in the 9th century would be "Cormacc macc Airtt." "Cormacc" and "Artt" were two of the most common names in early-period Ireland. ("Artt" changes to "Airtt" after "macc.")

SCA members are strongly discouraged from using the names of famous people. The College of Arms won't register "Cormacc macc Airtt" or any variant, and we strongly recommend that you use a different name. Theoretically, you could add a descriptive term to your name (for example, adding "Dub" or "black" to create "Cormacc Dub macc Airtt." However, we would advise you to use a different name or patronymic.

Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn and Talan Gwynek contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful, and that we can continue to assist you.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
