Some of the Academy's early reports contain errors that we haven't yet corrected. Please use it with caution.

Greetings,

Here's the information we found on "Renata" as a 14th-century German name.

We don't have any historical examples of "Renata," but we think it's a reasonable name for your period. The male name "Renatus" was popular throughout Europe, both because it was the name of a saint and because of its meaning, "reborn." Although we don't have direct evidence for "Renata" in Germany, the existence of "Renatus" that you reported and the modern use of the name is circumstancial evidence that it's a plausible name.

Although we're not part of the College of Arms, Jaelle of Armida, the current Laurel Queen of Arms (chief herald of the SCA) decided on May 29 that people who want to register their names or armory will usually not need to include photocopies of documentation referenced in letters from the Academy of S. Gabriel. If you want to submit your name or armory, just include the entire letter, including headers, from the Academy.

If Laurel decides that photocopies are necessary, she will contact the Academy and we will get the necessary copies to her. Kingdom or local heralds with questions or concerns about this policy should contact her.

This doesn't mean that "Renata" will automatically pass, but it makes it likely. Of course, since we haven't commented on the rest of the name we can't say whether or not your full name can be registered.

Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn, Talan Gwynek, and Arval Benicouer contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
