Greetings,

Here's the information we found on the name "Corwin" and Irish pirates in general.

"Corwin" isn't a medieval given name in any language. The earliest reference we found was from "The Chronicles of Amber," a fantasy series written in the last 30 years. Because so many people wish to use Corwin, we have a Web page on the topic at

http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/problemnames/corwin.html

There is a French name "Corbin" which was used in the 8th century. If you wanted to use this name you could have a French persona, but if you'd like to be an Irish pirate you'd need a different name. The most similar Irish name we could find is "Cormacc." (1)

If you're interested in other Irish names, let us know what you're looking for and we can provide other suggestions.

The Irish raided the coasts of Britain in the 8th century, although others were coming to settle there. They weren't professional pirates in the modern sense but they may be what you're looking for. Unfortuately we can't suggest any books on the topic; a good history of medieval Ireland or Wales (where the Irish landed) might be helpful.

Arval Benicoeur, Talan Gwynek, Pedro de Alcazar, and Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful, and that we can continue to assist you.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
