Greetings,

Here's the information we found on your desired arms, "Sable fretty gules, a thing argent."

We weren't able to find any examples of a fretty with color-on-color in medieval heraldry. However, we found several medieval patterns that would allow you to use fretty and the three tinctures you want.

It was common to use fretty on an ordinary (a geometric charge). For example, you could use something like

"Sable, a bend argent fretty gules" or
"Gules, a pale argent fretty sable."

There are a lot of possibilities along this line. Most of the crosses conflict with registered arms, and so does, "Gules, a fess argent fretty sable." However, that leaves plenty of designs using bends, chevrons, and pales.

In designs where the field is fretty, the most common charges are ordinaries, usually a fess, charged chief, or bordure engrailed. A design like

"Gules fretty argent, a fess sable" or
"Gules fretty argent, a bordure engrailed sable"

would be consistent with medieval style.

Rouland Carre, Arval Benicoeur, Zenobia Naphtali, Talan Gwynek, Madawc, and Elspeth Anne Roth contribued to this letter.

If you send us a few designs, we can check them for conflict and make other suggestions. Let us know if you have other questions.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
