Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel.

Here is the information we found about the name "Mathila of Griffons Point", which you wanted to use as a 16th century woman's name.

We were unable to find any examples of "Mathila." The closest we could come was "Matillis", a 14th century Latin form of "Matilda." The sources we have only show these spellings for Matilda in the 16th [1], [2], [3], [4]

By the 16th century, almost everyone in England was using modern-style inherited surnames, which makes a true locative, like "of Griffons Point", pretty unlikely as a formal part of your name. It's likely that you would have had an inherited surname, though you might have used the locative as an informal description, to differentiate yourself from other Matilda's in the area.

Arval D'Espas Nord, Talan Gwynek, Rouland Carre, AElfwyn aet Gyrwum contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful, and that we can continue to assist you.

Yours in service,
Margaret Makafee
