Academy of Saint Gabriel Report 601

This report is available at http://www.s-gabriel.org/601

Some of the Academy's early reports contain errors that we haven't yet corrected. Please use it with caution.

Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel!

You asked for information on the use of "Brefni" as a Gaelic first name. Here is what we have found.

We found no evidence of "Brefni" used as a given name. The most similar thing we found is an old place name, "Bréifne", which corresponds to the modern Counties Cavan and Leitrim [1] ("é" represents an 'e' with a sharp accent.) Place names were not used as given names in period Gaelic.

If you would like to look at some lists of Gaelic given names, please check the articles available at

http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/celtic.html

I hope this letter has been useful. Please write us again if any part of it has been unclear or if you have other questions. I was assisted in researching and writing this letter by Tangwysytl vz. Morgant Glasfryn.

For the Academy,

Arval Benicoeur
