Academy of Saint Gabriel Report 666

This report is available at http://www.s-gabriel.org/666

Some of the Academy's early reports contain errors that we haven't yet corrected. Please use it with caution.

Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel!

You asked for information about North Indian and Mongolian names. Here is what we have found.

We have no sources that deal with North Indian names. There are books on the subject; you can find some by going to the New York Public Library web page

http://catnyp.nypl.org/

Do a subject search on "Names personal India" and you will get a list of several dozen books. We don't know how good any of them might be for Society purposes. If you can get hold of any of them, you should look for dated citations of names used by real people before 1600; this will be the most important hallmark of a book that will be useful for choosing a Society name. If you do find any book that seems to be useful, please let us know; we're always interested in expanding our bibliography.

There is a good article on period Mongolian names available on the web at

http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/mongolian.html

Some Mongolian name elements do refer to animals; the article mentions that the Mongolian word for "falcon" is used as a component of names, but unfortunately it doesn't give the word.

I hope this letter has been useful. Please write us again if any part of it has been unclear or if you have other questions.

For the Academy,

Arval Benicoeur
