You asked for information about a charge division which looks like "per bend" with a playing card spade sprouting from each side of the line of division. Here is what we have found. As you suspected, this division is found in German heraldry. Analogous designs were used in period, albeit perhaps only in late period. The arms you found in Fox-Davies are probably those of Ortlieb (of Nuernberg) "Per bend gules and argent, two linden leaves in bend sinister stems issuant from the line of division" [2]. A German roll of arms from 1605 has several lines of division which sprout leaves [1]: Die Hilinger "Per chevron ploye argent and gules, a trefoil issuant to base from the tip, flanked by two trefoils issuant to chief counterchanged." (f.96) von Hermbsdorf "Per chevron ploye argent and gules, a linden leaf gules issuant to chief at the tip." (f.81) Rumpff (2nd and 3rd quarter) "Per bend Or and sable, two trefoils in bend sinister issuant from the line of division counterchanged. (f.24) In case your herald wants a precedent for using this design in Society armory, you can tell him that it has been registered at least twice: Jannequinne Richardot "Per bend sinister Or and vert, two trefoils in bend, slips issuant from the line of division, counterchanged. Winifred de Schyppewallebotham "Per bend Or and purpure, two linden leaves in bend sinister, stem issuant from the line of division, within a bordure counterchanged." I hope this letter has been useful. Please write us again if any part of it has been unclear or if you have other questions. I was assisted in researching and writing this letter by Zenobia Naphtali, Elsbeth Anne Roth, and Talan Gwynek.
