manhattan lullaby

sleep well, my darling,
tonight you're still in luck.
on the street, police cars sing,
	but not for you.
the screech of the fire-truck,
the ambulance's whine,
are dangerous signs,
	but not for you.

sirens, like bird calls --
silent with trouble near.
when the tiger hunts, a hush falls
	in the jungle night.
darling, the noise you hear
means evil has had its say.
now help is on the way
	in the city night.

someone needs pity,
someone found out his fate.
bad night in the big city,
	but not for you.
sleep now, it's very late;
you'll be safe in your dreams.
the sirens still scream,
	but not for you.
