Greg Pratt

Welcome!

It’s all you ever wanted to know about Greg Pratt, but were afraid to ask. Okay, you won’t find out everything. It’s just a web site! It’s always more rewarding to get to know someone in person. Think of this web page as a survey course, all about me.

The End Of 2,922 Dark Days

Today — 20 January 2009 — was a wondrous, thought-provoking, and emotional day. It would be too easy to dwell on the past eight years, and what is, without hyperbole, one of the worst presidents in our nation’s history.

That past did not matter today, because we have been given permission to have hope again. As Barack Obama completed his oath of office, the crowds on TV erupted in applause, and I actually felt tears well up in my eyes.

Today was not about bitterness. I dare to hope. And for the first time since 9/11, I am genuinely, unapologetically proud to be an American.

New home page — coming soon!

Last year, I said that I was planning on upgrading my web site. Since I’m still unemployed (thanks, Dick!), and still looking for work, I’ve been using my spare time to migrate my documents over to a new web server. I’ve already completed translating most of the documents to XHTML and CSS. I still have a lot of content to update. This includes a new photo gallery that will be much more robust, current, and useful.

Stay tuned!

My $HOME away from home

I’m a very satisfied customer of the venerable ISP, Public Access Networks, better known as Panix. If you’re curious why I left the now-emaciated Frontiernet in August 2001, you might find this Usenet article informative. It was one of the smartest moves I ever made.

Rutherford Train Station Where I Live

I reside in the quiet, residential town of East Rutherford, New Jersey, where I’ve lived since February 1999. The town is often overshadowed by our much bigger brother, New York City, the skyline of which can be seen from several places in town. But we’re nationally famous as the home of the Meadowlands Sport Complex, which includes Giants Stadium and the Continental Airlines Arena.

We have peace and quiet, but also enjoy easy access to Manhattan if we want it. What more could I ask for?

I am a man of contradictions who is often easy to decipher.

I can be stoic and passionate. I prefer order, if not neatness, yet enjoy gardening. The “personal touch” is a necessary part of my life, in spite of my strong orientation toward computers. I have a notoriously short fuse, and yet I am one of the most patient men you will ever meet.

I am me — nothing more, nothing less.
