This is where I spent a lot of my time at home during the winter and spring of 1998: in front of my computer. (March 1998.)

These five photos are from a collection of images that are the first pictures taken of me in my Park Avenue apartment in Rochester. The originals are black and white as well, which I still enjoy as an expressive medium. (February 1998.)

These two pictures were self-portraits, created by setting a camcorder on top of a Power Macintosh 8600 in RIT's Information Technology lab and performing single-frame video captures. There are actually 40 such images, of which these two represent best. (March 1997.)

Here's a picture of me in front of my apartment in Colony Manor, one of four apartment complexes operated for students by RIT. I resided at this address from September 1994 until November 1997.

Here I am during my first week of work at a new job within Information Systems & Computing at RIT. Yes, my hair really was that long. (September 1995.)

glp-bald.jpeg

Didn't believe me, huh? Less than a year later, I took the opposite extreme. (June 1996.)

osama01.jpeg

In August 1997, I decided to take an impromptu vacation to the San Francisco Bay Area, realizing that I would probably not have the luxury of vacation time for a while when I graduated and entered the working world. Along with my friend Osama, who himself had just moved to the Bay Area, I set about exploring San Francisco and its surrounding cities. The pictures here show me at three of San Francisco's better-known landmarks: the Golden Gate Bridge, Treasure Island, and Castro Street (the heart of that city's famous gay community). I also visited the headquarters of my favorite computer company, Apple Computer (located in Cupertino), where I paid homage to Clarus the Dogcow. (Moof!)

I also managed to get a picture of the normally camera-shy Osama. It wasn't a great picture, but he wasn't in a position to argue - he had just taken an ill-fated short-cut from the top of Twin Peaks, the highest point in San Francisco. (August 1997.)

turkey-1995.jpeg

While in college at RIT, I began celebrating Thanksgiving in Rochester; my guests were usually other college students who were stuck in town for the break. Here I am in 1995, with my pièce de résistance, a 20-pound golden-roasted turkey. My dozen or so guests picked nearly every usable piece of meat from that bird. (November 1995.)

bulgarian-wedding.jpeg

My first trip to Europe occurred in 1997 when I flew to Sofia, Bulgaria, to attend my brother's wedding. This is a picture of me, my brother Jonathan, my sister-in-law Bobbi, and her brother Stoycho. (June 1997.)

jon-plovdiv.jpeg

The first of these two pictures of my brother was also taken in 1997. It was a tradition among my brother's friends to get together and smoke cigars the night before a wedding. There are times when a cigar is just a cigar. (An amusing experience, though I can't say as I enjoyed tasting my fillings.) (June 1997.)

The second picture was from my brother's apartment in Plovdiv, the Bulgarian town where he met his wife. (August 1995?)

parents-bulgaria.jpeg

My parents really enjoyed their trip to Bulgaria, too. This picture was taken in the garden in front of the house where we stayed. Rosebushes are very common around Sofia. (June 1997.)

tito-tree.jpeg

My friend Tito is difficult to describe. People who ask usually get the answer, "Well, he's... he's just Tito." I usually credit him with teaching me how to smile, something I wasn't very good at before I met him. (June 1997.)

mro01.jpeg

Manuel is a good friend of mine. He rarely lets people take candid photos of him, but someone managed to grab this picture while he was talking on the phone in his kitchen. (August 1997?)

dacat1.jpeg

My friend Atif says this is how he wants to be pictured. He's really much, much nicer than this. Of course, he still keeps that freezer locked in his basement... (September 1997.)
