About this program

This program is best viewed with Netscape, Mosaic, MS Explorer, and the linemode browser (forms version) Lynx-2.5FM. Some browsers may not display the data nicely, but they should all now display it correctly. Previous problems with the RedHat Linux RedBaron, and MMM, and a few other browsers should now be fixed. It seemed that these browsers don't handle the underscore properly.

This program is based on the original Cycling Calculator, with modifications to allow for extra high or low gearing combinations. For lack of having a more technically correct name for the chainrings, I have named them MD, HD and SD, shown below as cr_m, cr_h and cr_s respectively.

The chainring labeled cr_m is the "chainring_main", or "MAIN DRIVE", MD for short.
This is where the pedals are, where your feet go.

cr_h is the "chainring_host", or "HOST DRIVE", HD for short.
The HOST DRIVE is always directly connected the the Main Drive; cr_m, regardless of whether your gearing UP or gearing DOWN.

cr_s is the "chainring_slave" or "SLAVE DRIVE", or SD for short.
The SLAVE ring is always connected to the freewheel cluster.

Currently, up to nine freewheel cogs can be entered. The chainrings are all single rings, so this calculator will only display up to nine speeds.

Who would use a program like this?

Obviously, this calculator is geared more towards the specialized group of cyclists. One who might be working on some sort of high_speed record breaking human powered vehicle, or an all purpose monster trike with 40 inch truck inner tubes for tires. Whatever brought you to this page, I hope you find some use for this calculator.
