711 Day 11 - Shæfer's Pass Camp
We left Crater Lake and passed through Miners Park Camp and
North Fork Urraca Camp (We had the opportunity to do rock climbing
at Miner's Park, thought I cannot recall if we actually did it).
We arrived at Shæfer's Pass where we camped.
This area is quite nice.
Not much water, but the area is very shaded and park-like.
Karl, Matt, Derek, and I, mill about camp
waiting for dinner to prepare itself. |
There was also very little to do here except try to chase
mule deer out of the camp site. This was, in fact, probably
the most deer-populated place we visited.
We took turns trying to feed them -- which did not
take much trying. Feeding the wildlife is, of course, discouraged.
But, it is something which everyone does, especially here.
Of course, this is one reason why there are so many of them
here at Shæfer's Pass.

The deer pictures, particularly the one on the left,
are pictures which most everybody who hikes the Tooth of Time
takes. This is because Shæfer's Pass is the starting
point of Tooth Ridge -- the end of many a trek.
Shæfer's Pass overlooks two valleys, one to the north, and the other to the south.
I need to get some more pictures of it up. Like Upper Clark's Fork,
this was a rather busy area with many crews gathering to stay their
last night on the trail. We did not set up tents this night.
We slept on the pine needles under the trees and the view of the
night sky which they framed.
