Comments: Nope...still not dead.
I'm reading The Children of Men now and am enjoying it.
Root Beer: Not sure if you can get it in Seattle, but Sprecher(Milwaukee company) is really good.

I've had my root beer radar on for a long time now.
Thomas Kemper is firmly a top favorite of mine. The honey's verrry nice. If you like it in a bottle, you GOTTA try it on tap. I used to quaff the stuff from the source at Pyramid Alehouse in Berkeley. I know there's one in Seattle. Go!
(Read at your own risk: You can also get TKRB by the keg.)
I would second the Sprecher nod. I've mail ordered it from the brewery, but it's not cheap to do so. Seems to be more of a mid-northern states market. I do know you can find it in NYC.

Last but not least, I really like Natural Brew Draft Root Beer. Just had some tonight, in fact. Very nice bourbon vanilla notes.
I still have grand plans to make my own some day.
As for barbecuing, most excellent work, White. Depending on the viande du jour, try spraying it with apple juice to keep it moist and flavorful. Adding soaked pecan shells (placed in a smoker box) also adds nice flavors. Hickory makes for yummy experimentation as well. And, of course, salmon + cedar = yum.
As for everything else: bona fortuna sit semper.
