Campers' Group Bulletin - Spring 1998

After a mild Winter, we're ready to take our tents out of storage and find some nice level plots of ground. For hardy campers, the first camping trip of the season is by the Delaware River in mid-April, the best time of the year for river adventures. We're also returning to Fire Island National Seashore early this year before the bugs become too numerous.

Our June trips are less rigorous than the ones in April and May, but the parks will still be sparsely populated. The weather is likely to be warm and lakes will be open for swimming. June is one of the best months of the year to camp out.

To reserve a space on a weekend trip or day event, call the leaders between Sunday and Wednesday of the previous week, before 10 PM. If you need information earlier than that, call David Levner at 718-897-1448.

To go on a camping or cabin trip, you must be a member. You can mail us your dues or pay at the site. One year's membership costs $12 for an individual or $18 for a family ($8 or $12 if you receive the newsletter by e-mail). ACTIVITIES

March 6-8, Pocono Environmental Education Center, Dingmans Ferry, PA
Winter sports and environmental education at this wooded preserve. Two nights and five meals (Saturday breakfast through Sunday lunch), $100 per person. You can rent x-country skis if there's snow. Saturday March 21, First Day of Spring Party, Staten Island
Party with us on the south shore of Staten Island. Food is pot luck. We'll share our pictures of last year's camping trips. Bring musical instruments if you play, or even if you don't. Accessible by public transportation. Limited to members and friends of members. NO CALLS BEFORE MARCH 15.

April 17-19, Bull's Island Recreation Area, Stockton NJ
We're camping on an island in the Delaware River. You can swim, fish, canoe, raft, kayak or tube. The Recreation Area is part of the Delaware & Raritan Canal Park which contains a 30-mile mixed use trail (hiking and biking) along an old railroad bed that parallels the Delaware & Raritan Canal. Saturday April 25, Lively Abstract Art Opening, Manhattan
Long-time member Helen Levin will exhibit some of her paintings in a group show at the Chuck Levitan Gallery at 42 Grand St. Is the art or the opening going to be lively? Probably both. The opening is from 5-8 PM. NO CALLS BEFORE APRIL 19.

Sunday May 3, Bird-watching walk in Pelham Bay Park, Bronx, NY
Take a hike in the biggest park in the Bronx. We might see songbirds, hawks, osprey and dragonflies. Bring binoculars if you own them and a prepared lunch or food to cook on a grill. Accessible by public transportation. NO CALLS BEFORE APRIL 26.

May 15-17, Fire Island National Seashore, Watch Hill, NY
Camp in the sun by the sea. We guarantee there'll be no crowds and few mosquitoes this weekend. With its flowers in bloom, Fire Island is most colorful in May. Enjoy hiking, the scenery, and the beach. Tepid showers and flush toilets. Accessible by public transportation. EXPERIENCED CAMPERS ONLY. NO CALLS BEFORE MAY 10.

May 22-25, Stokes State Forest, Branchville, NJ
We're returning to shady Group Site H. This park has many hiking trails including six miles of the Appalachian Trail. You can also swim, boat and fish. There are great views from the top of Sunrise Mountain and in the Tillman Ravine Natural Area. Toilets at the site but no showers. Limited to 20 people. NO CALLS BEFORE MAY 17.

June 5-7, Mongaup Pond State Park, DeBruce NY
Mongaup Pond is actually a huge lake in the Catskills in which you can swim, fish and boat. Or you can enjoy the scenery as you hike or bicycle. Hot showers and flush toilets. NO CALLS BEFORE MAY 31.

June 19-21, Cheesequake State Park, Matawan NJ
This park contains ecosystems ranging from northern forest to coastal marshes to pine barrens. There is a lake for swimming and fishing and ample hiking trails. Despite the similarities in their names, Cheesequake does not supply cheesecake but you can bring your own. Flush toilets at the site, hot showers in another part of the park. NO CALLS BEFORE JUNE 14.
