Summer started early this year: we had a couple of 90 degree days at our Memorial Day camping trip in May. To make sure you stay cool, we’re camping near water on every trip from now through September. So get your bathing suit out of the closet, take your boat out of the garage, get ready, get set, get wet.

Saturday June 24, Day Trip, Arrow Park, Monroe NY Celebrate the beginning of summer with us by hiking, boating and swimming in this rustic private park in Orange County. Bring a picnic lunch, sturdy shoes and a bathing suit. NO CALLS BEFORE JUNE 17. |
June 30-July 4, Camping Weekend, Hickory Run State Park, White Haven PA Join us for an extra-long 5-day weekend at this heavily wooded site. Tranquil Mud Run is less than a mile away, and Hawk Falls is just a little further. For a longer hike, you can go to Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark that was created by frost heave during the last ice age. The aquatic set can swim in Sandstone Lake or float their boats in the nearby Lehigh River. And we’re sure to have at least one all-you-can-eat pancake meal at the Hickory House just outside the park. Outhouses at the site, flush toilets and showers by the lake. NO CALLS BEFORE JUNE 23. July 14-16, Camping Weekend, Buttonwood Hill Campsite in Wharton State Forest, Batsto NJ We have this campsite all to ourselves in the middle of Wharton State Forest, the largest park in New Jersey. Wharton is in a pine barren where the soil is sandy and pine trees predominate. There’s excellent canoeing and kayaking nearby on the Batsto and Mullica Rivers. You can also walk to Crowley’s Landing and swim in the Batsto River, or hike and pick blueberries on the trails leading directly from our campsite. July 28-30, Camping Weekend, Stokes State Forest, Branchville NJ Take me back to shady group site H. But first, will you join me on a hike? We have over 30 miles of trails to choose from, including six miles of the Appalachian Trail. Whichever trail we take, I want to end up at the shelter on Sunrise Mountain so I can look off into distance to the east and the west. And my trip won’t be complete until I swim in Stony Lake and walk through the Tillman’s Ravine Natural Area. Near High Point State Park and the Delaware River. Flush toilets and hot showers. August 4-6, Camping Weekend, Promised Land State Park, Canadensis PA Camp on the shore of Promised Land Lake. You can swim at Pickerel Point, a short walk from the site, or take a hike and come back with a bucket full of blueberries. We’ll probably rent a canoe for 24 hours, moor it near our site, and everyone can take turns using it. You can also explore the Bruce Lake Natural Area and Conservation Island. August 18-20, Camping Weekend, Bodine Field Campsite in Wharton State Forest, Wading River NJ We’re returning to Wharton (see the the July 14-16 trip), but to a different and more primitive campsite. Our site, along the Wading River and near a town with that name, has pine trees and is sandy. We’re bringing our own tables because none are provided. September 1-4, Labor Day Camping Weekend, High Point State Park, Sussex NJ Is summer over? Not quite, but Labor Day Weekend is usually our biggest camping trip of the year. And this one will take place at the highest point in New Jersey. You can boat, fish, swim, and hike the Appalachian and other trails. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a friendly black bear. September 15-17, Camping Weekend, Burlingame State Park, Charlestown RI Hurricanes stay away! The last time we camped in Burlingame, we got hit by the remnants of Hurricane Ivan. But the weather cleared up on Saturday afternoon, we dried out and had a great time. The park is near the ocean and criss-crossed with hiking trails. It is likely that the ocean will still be warm enough to swim in. We’ll be looking for rabbits, muskrat, mink, red fox, river otters, raccoons and weasels that make their homes in the park, and watch the birds at the 1000-acre Watchaug Pond.
