Campers' Group Fact Sheet
Who we are
Campers' Group was started in the late '60s by good
people who loved the outdoors, but lacked the spirited companions with whom
to venture out, or all the equipment needed for camping.
What we do
Each weekend we go to a different campground within a
three-hour drive of New York City. We choose rustic, secluded sites, away
from the crowds, trailers and radios. We share enthusiasm, some equipment,
and the effort to keep the group going.
How trips are run
The trips average ten to twenty people with
two members acting as leaders. From Sunday to Wednesday before the weekend,
the leaders take calls and arrange rides. At the site, they collect fees and
suggest activities. Every active member is expected to take a turn leading
trips.
What to bring
Bring a sleeping bag, an air mattress or foam pad,
food, plates, cups, utensils, soap, towels, toiletries, jeans, shorts, shirts,
socks, a bathing suit, a warm jacket, walking shoes or boots, a flashlight
and a rain poncho or slicker.
How we eat
Each camper is responsible for his or her own food. Some
cook on the group's two burner propane stove, and others on wood or charcoal
fires. We bring groceries from home or buy them in towns near the campsite, and
store food in coolers with ice.
Trip costs
Transportation costs are determined by drivers and
riders. Usually the passengers pay their share for tolls and gas. Other
costs are site fees (free to $10 per night), trip expenses ($1-2 per weekend)
and food. The total for a camping weekend is seldom more than $40. Cabin
trips cost a little more.
Dues
Quarterly bulletins, listing the trips, are mailed to
members. A year's individual membership costs $12. Family membership
is $18.
