Stokes State Forest
Branchville, NJ

In 15,319 acres, there are 77 family campsites, 9 group campsites, 15 lean-tos, 3 lakes, 25 hiking trails. You can swim in Stony Lake, boat in Lake Ocquittunk or fish in Big Flatbrook.

If you like to hike, pick up a map and trail guide at the park office. The Appalachian Trail offers spectacular views as it passes over the top of Sunrise Mountain. The Tillman Ravine natural area is also well worth visiting.

Of the three family campgrounds, Steam Mill, Shotwell and Lake Ocquittunk, Ocquittunk is my favorite because of the streams that run around it. For a group, I prefer site H because it's shaded.

The campsites have flush toilets, but the only showers are cold ones at Stony Lake.

Driving directions: Take Interstate 80 West to exit 34B in New Jersey. Then follow New Jersey Route 15 North to New Jersey Route 206 North. The park is on the right side of 206. (As of Memorial Day 2005, there was construction on 206 and no sign for the park office is visible as you drive north. If you see signs for Route 560 West and Dingman's Bridge, you've gone too far. Driving south on 206, a sign for the park office is visible.)
