A wooded Westchester County park that's good for hiking in the Summer and cross-country skiing in the Winter.
Fahnestock State Park, Carmel NY
A rugged forest, dotted with countless lakes, and criss-crossed by hiking trails, the park has both family and group campsites. During the Summer you can swim in or rent boats at Canopus Lake. Many trails run through the park, including a section of the Appalachian Trail.
Fire Island Cabin, Atlantique, NY
A cozy cabin owned by the Appalachian Mountain Club on the bay that's just a short walk from the beach. Sleeps 24 in two bunk rooms. Small sailboats (sunfish) and canoes are available for you to use. Meals provided on the weekends, and during the week you cook for yourself. Open May through mid-October.
Fire Island National Seashore, Watch Hill, NY
Camp between the dunes of this barrier island, 1/2 a mile wide and 30 miles long. In addition to beach, there are salt marshes, fresh-water marshes, forests and thickets. No cars!

Minnewaska State Park, New Paltz, NY
The site of a former luxury hotel, this park is great for hiking, biking and swimming in the summer, x-country skiing in the winter, and rock climbing during all seasons. No camping.
Mongaup Pond State Park, Livingston Manor, NY
A large park in the Catskill Mountains that's good for swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and bicycling.
North/South Lake State Park, Haines Falls, NY
Great hiking, incredible views, and good swimming in the summer.
Taconic State Park, Millerton, NY
A large park that straddles Connecticut and Massachusetts. You can swim, fish or boat on Rudd Pond. Hikers will find trails in the park and nearby, including one that passes Bashbish Falls. Woodland Valley State Park, Phoenicia, NY
In a rugged valley surrounded by some of the highest peaks of the Catskill Mountains, you can hike, swim, boat or fish here. Trails from the park lead into the mountains.
