Saturday, November 28, Easy to Moderate day hike, Anthonys Nose, Cortlandt Manor NY
The vista at the top of this mini-mountain (supposedly named for a pre-Revolutionary War captain with a Cyrano sniffer) is like a helicopter view of the Bear Mountain Bridge and the Hudson River. Well meet at the small trail head parking lot (please arrive on time, space is limited). The first half mile is a steep climb that levels off to a forest walk, and then opens up to spectacular views of the Hudson Valley! The total hike is 2.6 miles, up-and-back, approximate round trip time 2.5 hours, and total ascent is 792 ft.
Located in Ramapo Mountain State Forest, Ramapo Lake is a popular hiking destination for locals and travelers alike. We will hike approximately 5 miles for 3+ hours on easy to moderate trails. There will be moderate rock scrambling near the start and maybe a small stream to cross. Otherwise the trail around the lake is relatively flat and easy. We will also climb Fox Mountain to the old mansion and explore the Van Slyke Castle ruins. On a clear day the NYC skyline is visible from the lookout.
Meet in the lower parking lot on Skyline Drive just off I-287. (I-287 to Exit 57, north on Skyline Drive briefly - the lower parking lot is on the left, there is a large wooden sign but it comes up kind of suddenly. The entrance is pretty rutted, so take it easy if you have a low-clearance vehicle. This popular trail head lot fills up quickly.) Dress in synthetic or wool layers, wear hiking boots or a hiking shoe - NO sneakers! Bring lunch or energy snacks with about 1-2 liters of water. If it is icy, wearing Microspikes or another type of traction device on your boot for ice and packed snow is highly recommended.
