Friday, July 31, Evening Meeting and Full Moon Walk/Hike, REI East Hanover, East Hanover NJ
REI is allowing us to use their 2nd floor community room for our meeting. We’ll start at approximately 7:30pm to plan fall and early winter events. Offer suggestions or just hear about our future events and ideas. Ken will review event host (trip leader) responsibilities and explain how easy it is to host one of our trips. After the meeting, follow us over to nearby Loantaka Brook Reservation for a short full moon walk/hike! Carrying a headlamp/flashlight is a good idea if the skies cooperate, or even if they do not. Please wear the appropriate footwear, bring an energy snack, and 1-2 liters of water. If anyone is interested, we could get a bite to eat after in Madison or Morristown. There is no fee to attend, and you’re welcome to shop in the store before the meeting. ***If you have joined us on one or more of our outings in the past, we would greatly appreciate you volunteering to help lead a weekend or day event. If it is your first time, don’t worry, we will partner you with a more experienced member, and give you enough information to make it very easy. We are a volunteer-run club that needs our members to participate.***

Sunday, August 2, Day Hike, Pyngyp Mountain, Harriman State Park NY
This is not a beginner hike. The Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail is considered to be one of the most challenging trails in Harriman State Park. We will cover 7.5 miles with a total of five climbs including a 250ft near vertical rock scramble. We will visit a glacial erratic known as the Irish Potato, pass attractive cascades along Tiorati Brook and summit Pyngyp mountain. Please note: We will be crossing the Palisades Parkway on foot with cars traveling at high speed. Because of the high risk associated with the parkway crossing and rock scrambles, children, dogs and novice hikers will not be allowed to attend this hike. Hiking boots are required. Absolutely no sneakers (you will not be permitted to hike with the group)! Pace will be moderate with breaks as required. Bring at least 2 liters of water & a snack/lunch. Wet conditions on the day of our hike will lead to postponement. GPS Coordinates: 41.297598,-74.027274
Driving Directions:
Take the Palisades Interstate Parkway to Exit 17 (Anthony Wayne Recreation Area) and park in the large parking area just beyond the entrance kiosk. We will meet next to the kiosk. We’ll need 1 or 2 volunteers to drive the group to the start of our hike. We’ll leave the volunteer’s cars at the trail head parking lot and hike back to Anthony Wayne Recreation Area. We’ll return the volunteers to their cars after the hike.

Take a day or two off from work and extend your weekend with us at this unique hostel (also known as Star of the Sea), and enjoy all that this beautiful island has to offer! Originally a 19th century lifesaving station, the hostel’s main building has a large kitchen, dining room, and a den. Separate buildings house men’s, women’s and co-ed dorms. Leave your car in one of the ferry lots on the mainland (remember to pack light), bring or rent a bicycle (or even an electric scooter), and tour the island on miles of bike paths, or take in the flora and fauna by hiking or kayaking. Surfside Beach is just across the street from the hostel. There is even a shuttle bus to take you from the center of the island to the historic whaling village. Enjoy the many shops and seafood restaurants! Please RSVP now on meetup.com to be included in our group hostel discount of $35 per person, per night. Your name will then be added to our list.
