AMC's Fire Island Cabin

AMC's Fire Island Cabin
Atlantique, NY

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) owns a small cabin on a large parcel of mostly undeveloped land. The cabin sleeps 24 in two bunkrooms, contains a complete kitchen and has bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets. Meals and special programs are provided on weekends; you can cook for yourself during the week.

The cabin is on the bay, sheltered from the ocean's fury during storms, but it's just a short walk to the beach. Small sailboats (sunfish) and canoes are available for you to use.

Caution: Wherever on Fire Island you go, take care to avoid the ticks that carry Lyme disease.

1996 rates: Sunday-Friday $25/night ($20 for AMC members), Saturday $60 ($55 for AMC members). Rates are higher on holiday weekends.

Directions via public transportation: Take the Long Island Railroad to Bay Shore. From the railroad station, take a taxi or walk down Fourth Ave. It becomes Maple Ave. and leads to the Fire Island ferry terminal. Ride a ferry to Atlantique and walk east along the bay to the cabin.

Driving directions: Take the Southern State Parkway to exit 42S. From there, take Fifth Ave. south and turn left onto Union Blvd. Go several blocks and turn right on Fourth Ave., which becomes Maple Ave. and leads to the Fire Island ferry terminal. Parking at the ferry terminal costs $10 per day. You can also park for free at the Long Island Railroad station 1 mile away.
