Fahnestock State Park
Carmel NY

In highlands east of the Hudson River, the park is heavily wooded and contains many lakes. You can swim or rent boats on the largest one, Canopus Lake. Fishing is permitted on Canopus Lake, Pelton Pond, John Allen Pond, Duck Pond and Stillwater Lake.

There are many trails to hike, including the Appalachian Trail. Mountain bikes, horses and snowmobiles are allowed on some trails. In the Winter, you can cross-country ski here.

Near Hudson Highlands State Park and Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary.

Caution: Take care to avoid the ticks that carry Lyme disease.

Hot showers and flush toilets.

Driving directions: Take the Taconic Parkway to New York Route 301 West. The park is on 301. (Caution: Both the Taconic Parkway and Route 301 are substandard roads. Go slow when turning off the Taconic - the exit ramp is much too short.)

The family sites are on the left as you're driving west on 301. To get to the group campsites, go west on 301 three miles from the Taconic Parkway and turn left on Dennytown Road. Drive 1.7 miles on Dennytown Road and a rough road to the group sites will be on your right. Almost opposite the rough road, there is a bathroom and a parking lot on the left.
