    DB-xx Connectors:
    1.     These connectors are heavily used on the FIRST Computer boards. The 3 likely values of xx are 9( not 09), 15 and 25.
    2.     Typical uses are serial ports for DB-9, game ports for DB-15, and parallel printer ports for DB-25. Each size can be used in many realms.
    3.     This project uses ready-made cables. There are times when one must know pin numbers.
          A plug is pushed into a socket. An example is pushing the power plug on a TV set into the socket on a wall. If one is looking at a DB-15 plug, the pin numbers are:

          9       15
      If one is looking at a DB-15 socket, the socket numbers are:
         8            1
          15       9

      • Radio Shack, Annapolis Mall. Hours: Mon-Sat 10AM - 9:30 PM, and Sunday 11AM - 6PM
      •     Stevens Hardware is at 142 Dock St, and the phone is 410-269-0629. Hours: Mon-Fri 8:30AM - 5:30 PM, Sat 10AM-5PM, and Sunday noon-5PM. Mom-and-pop sized, it is a 3 minute walk from the competition in Halsey Field House.
            You'll need an adult to return to the Academy grounds - take one with you!
            Leave Halsey's front entrance, turning left on the sidewalk. Walk 2-300' to pass the guard shack. Take first left, Randall St., then pass Prince George's St. Finally, turn left onto Dock St. Stevens is about the 3rd store on the left.
      •     Parking is not available at the competition at Halsey Field House. Drive (Map) (Rules, Details) to the Navy-Marine Memorial Stadium. A frequent shuttle bus will take you to the Halsey Field House from the Stadium Parking lot. Park near the corner of Rowe Blvd and Taylor Ave.
    • RULES in Section 8. This event has both rules and safety inspections.
      Safety goes beyond quality and no sharp edges.

    • Most electronics for both FIRST & VEX is from is from Innovation First, Inc.
      The portion of that company making FIRST equipment is IFIRobotics. Basic vocabulary:
      • The circuit board used on the robot is called the Robot Controller, or RC.
      • Robot drivers use joysticks, switches, et al, to control the robot. Those controls all go to the other circuit board called the Operator Interface, or OI.

    • Other major electronic components include
      • Wheel drive motors are from CIM, part # FR801-001.
      • Motors operate via PWM controllers, such as the Victor 884.
        • PWM( Pulse Width Modulation) explained.
      • Other devices are enabled via relays such as the Victor Spike.

    • Get Ear Plugs( about $5 at CVS, etc); competitions are noisy++
