Scenes 11 Through 13b--The Second Phone Conversation

After their first kiss at yesterday's picnic, Michael and Mimi are waiting for their next phone conversation.

11 INT. MICHAEL'S BEDROOM - MORNING 11

The DIGITAL CLOCK by Michael's bed says it's a little after
    five in the morning.

Michael lies in bed on his back, staring into space.

12 INT. MIMI'S LIVING ROOM - MORNING 12

At the same ungodly hour of the morning, MIMI, wearing an
oversized T-shirt, is VACUUMING the floor, quite absorbed
    in the task.

13 INT. MIMI'S KITCHEN - MORNING 13

Mimi's ANALOG CLOCK now reads a minute or two before seven.

Mimi is washing DISHES. A moment later the phone RINGS.
Mimi runs for the phone with dripping hands.

13a INT. MIMI'S BEDROOM - MORNING 13a

Wiping her soapy hands on her T-shirt, Mimi answers the
    phone.

                          MIMI
              Hello?

13b INT. MICHAEL'S BEDROOM - MORNING 13b

    Michael is still in bed.

                          MICHAEL
              Hi.

We go back and forth between the two locations during the
    conversation.

Mimi sinks down on the bed when she hears Michael's voice.

                          MIMI
              Hi.

                          MICHAEL
              Did I wake you up?

                          MIMI
No. I've been up for hours.

                          MICHAEL
              Me too.
                   (pause)
So - how are you feeling?

                          MIMI
              Good. How are you?

                          MICHAEL
              I'm pretty spacey.

                          MIMI
              Are you happy?

                          MICHAEL
              I'm very happy.
                   (pause)
              It really happened, right?

                          MIMI
              Yes it did.

                          MICHAEL
              Whew.
                   (pause)
              So.

                          MIMI
              So.

                          MICHAEL
              So what are you thinking?

                          MIMI
              About...?

                          MICHAEL
              About us.

Mimi takes a pause, then goes for it.

                          MIMI
I'm thinking that I want to marry
              you.

Michael is startled, and gives a little involuntary laugh.

                          MICHAEL
              Oh, my God!

    Mimi waits for a response.

                          MICHAEL
              Mimi!

                          MIMI
              What?

                          MICHAEL
              Are you....?

    Michael doesn't finish.

                          MIMI
                   (cont.)
I do, Michael. I want to marry you.

                          MICHAEL
                   (laughing)
Wow. Wait a minute. Let me....

Michael takes a while to collect himself.

                          MICHAEL
I love you, Mimi. You know I love
              you.
                   (pause)
              I could marry you.

                          MIMI
Are you sure? You have to be sure,
Michael, because I don't know that
I'm such a prize as all that. You
always make a fuss over me, but....

    Mimi doesn't finish.

                          MICHAEL
              I'm sure I love you. That's one
              thing I'm sure of.
                   (pause)
              Are you sure?

                          MIMI
              I'm sure.

                          MICHAEL
Just a few days ago you....

    Michael lets the sentence hang.

                          MIMI
I know, but - even then I knew it.

    Another pause. Michael laughs.

                          MICHAEL
              I don't believe this. I think we
should do it before you change your
              mind.

                          MIMI
Give me two hours to pack a
              suitcase, and I'm ready.

    Michael laughs again in amazement.

                          MICHAEL
What's going on here? Is this an
              alternate universe or something?
                   (pause)
              Mimi, we haven't even slept
              together.

                          MIMI
                   (smiling)
Oh, no! I knew we'd forgotten
              something!

Michael laughs, still in a state of shock.

                          MIMI
                   (cont.)
It has been done before, you know.

                          MICHAEL
              What?

                          MIMI
              Marriage before sex.

                          MICHAEL
              Not in this century.

                          MIMI
              Don't you like the idea?

                          MICHAEL
              Uhhh....

                          MIMI
              I like it.

                          MICHAEL
                   (intrigued)
              You do?
                          MIMI
              That's the original concept, isn't
it? That's what it was supposed to
              be.

Michael loves it when Mimi gets abstract.

                          MICHAEL
              Are we being completely crazy?

                          MIMI
              I don't know. Are we?

                          MICHAEL
I think we are. But I've loved you
              for so long....

                          MIMI
              I love you too, Michael.

    Another pause.

                          MICHAEL
              Two hours, eh?

                          MIMI
              I was exaggerating a bit, I'm
afraid, Michael. I don't think you
              can get married that quickly.

                          MICHAEL
              You can't?

                          MIMI
No. They make you wait for a few
              days.
                   (pause)
              Unless you elope.
