Le Burger Roi et Mort! Vive Le Burger!

The year was 1957. The USSR shocked the world by shooting aloft Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. Yet, at a small burger chain James McLamore was hard at work producing what would turn out to be a far more insidious threat to this nation's health: The Whopper.

McLamore founded "Insta Burger King" in 1954, dropping the "Insta" a few years later.

He ceased having it his way Aug. 8, age 70.

One of McLamore's pals was Dave Thomas of Wendy's, who said that McLamore cut the ribbon when Wendy's opened its 40th restaurant.

The chairman of Wendy's, James W. Near, died June 22, age 58.

He is credited with turning the fast-food giant around in the late 80s by introducintg specialty sandwiches and urging Thomas to become an advertising spokesman.
