30 January - 1 February 1999: Ye Olde Something or Other

Well, it was just another typical day at the thrift shop. E and I discussed gay politics, etc. We noticed the prevalance of Chelsea hype in the Blade, as if it's the epicentre of everything. It gets very tiresome. One week the Blade had an article that went on way too long about the Chelsea Hotel; the next week it went on about Eighth Avenue in Chelsea as the next Restaurant Row. This is a whole city of gay people, not just in one little grid on the map.

On Sunday I spent some time in my office, and then went to A Different Light and went to their screening of The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. I saw J there. He often goes to the movies there on Sunday night. He had told me to do a diva turn like Brini when my article came out, so I did. LGNY published my book review of Jameson Currier's Where the Rainbow Ends, so I did. I handed him a copy the moment I saw him.

The movie is not spectacular, but there is a hilarious scene early on in which the idea of Holmes and Watson living together for five year, "five happy years," is given some extra dimension.

I must say, I love New York Public Library and its Internet abilities. I am constantly taking out books that I can reserve via the Internet. You just go into the catalogue and place holds with your library card barcode. NYPL has a huge gay collection, but it is scattered over a range of branch libraries. It's a collection in no one particular place.
