Patti Smith
"Gloria" 12-inch single (UK)

posted June 23, 2000

The original 1976 release of the single "Gloria" in the UK featured a censored version of the flipside which appeared in the States - a cover of the Who's rock anthem "My Generation". A year later, the 12-inch single pictured here was released with all of the original language intact.

In their August 1996 retrospective on Patti's career, Record Collector magazine appraised the 12" version as having twice the value of its 7" predecessor.

"My Generation" has never been the most difficult Patti Smith rarity to locate. In 1986 it was included on a commercially released Arista compilation LP which showcased their modern rock acts, including Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Television, Blondie, Graham Parker, and others. It was finally released on CD in 1996 when Patti's back catalogue was remastered and embellished with bonus tracks. It was included on the remastered version of Horses.
