Patti Smith
cover art for promo CD When Doves Cry

Date posted: Mar 30, 2002

Arista put together a radio-destined promo CD (ARPCD-5092) for Patti Smith's cover of Prince's 1984 hit When Doves Cry. Patti and the band performed the song in concert regularly in 1996, as part of a longer piece which segued into a slowed-down Ain't It Strange, a Smith song first released in 1976. For the March 2002 release of Land (1975-2002), a two-CD overview of Smith's career on Arista, Doves was recorded specifically for inclusion on the set, and two versions of the studio recording are on this promo: the album version and a radio edit which is more than a minute shorter. It was done at Electric Lady studios, with Lenny Kaye producing.

The CD packaging on the promo has two portraits of Patti on the stairwell at the Chelsea Hotel, from a photo session by Steven Sebring done for a fashion spread in W magazine's January 1997 issue called Patti Smith Dresses Up. The dress Patti is wearing is by Karl Lagerfeld for Chloe, to order, and the black wool and mohair coat is by Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garcons.
