the magpie bbs crew

Magpie HQ BBS was a thread based BBS system written by Steve Manes, well before the public caught on about how useful the internet might be. These were the days when modems were king, and I was in college and still using one of my Apple II computers.

Musician, restauranteur, motorcyclist, and all around cool guy, Steve is the author of the magpie BBS software that has brought so many people together. He's the third Steve in my techno-influences list (the others are Steve Wozniack and Steve Jobs)

Kim Moser
Kim is another Magpie BBSer (It's obvious what I did before I became internet crazed) Another person who shares an interest in animation and sci fi/thriller movies, Kim is also into rollerblading and computer programming. I used to joke that he should grow a ponytail. Now he not only has one but a vandyke as well! (Yes he's a "he" and no he's not Asian)

J William Porto
Another Magpie BBSer who became a friend. This one recommended me for my current job. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. He's also a very bright and motivated person, problem is -- he knows it! :-)
Oh, and he likes ants.

Thomas Shim
Met Tom through BBSing. We share an interest in animation and science fiction movies. Though we never seem to get together as often as we'd like.

Joel Raskin
Joel reverses the trend of me meeting someone online and then meeting them in person. Joel worked in another customer service group at work. We should find him a job as a beta-tester as he is usually the first person to buy into new bits of technology. The man even has his own domain name!

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a cool multi-platform chat platform that uses multiple linked servers to connect chatters from all over the world. I've met lots of varied and interesting people from my time on irc. Here are some of their web pages.

A nice mac-using, iPod slinging guy in San Francisco. Tim and I met on irc before doing dinner in San Francisco's Castro district. He was shy and reserved when I met him, but I think he can be wild and loony once he gets to know you.

Kim is a friend I met on irc a long time ago. Imagine my surprise when I got a call one evening that Kim had moved to NYC, and living in Brooklyn! Kim does lots of different jobs these days, but his favourite hat is that of the aspiring web designer.
