New York dance events

CDNY Events

      Country Dance New York holds its events at Metropolitan Duane Hall, 201 W. 13th St., from September to June. See the CDNY home page for details.

      Tuesday, 7 PM-10:15 English country dancing for ALL.



All Things Considered covers a dance night (need RealAudio)

      Saturday, 8 PM-10:45, Contra dancing (and occasional squares).

      As announced, 8 PM-10:45, CHALLENGING AMERICAN FRIDAY dances with a minimum of instruction.


      The pièce de résistance of the season is the New York Playford Ball held every spring. Dress in your most eye-catching to tread such favorites as Mr. Beveridge's Maggot, Nonesuch, Hambleton's Round O, the Bonny Bonny Broome, Mage on a Cree! Then pause for refreshment with Prawns William, the Bonny Cookie, and Mr. Maggot's Beverage! Register early and often! (Next Ball on April 17.)



During the summer recess, periodic afternoon dances are held at Alpine Boat Basin in New Jersey:

      Country Dance New York is a Center of the Country Dance and Song Society of America.

      CDSSA is in turn an affiliate of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

Other Events

     Mondays 7PM-9:45 -- Scots dancing by Scotia Dancers.

     Not unbearably out of reach are the Swinging Tern dances sponsored by the Folk Project. These are usually held on the first and third Saturday of the month at the Ogden Memorial Church in Chatham, N.J. The location is easily reached by New Jersey Transit trains to Chatham.

     Dances are sponsored by the Long Island Traditional Music Association at various locations.

     Also in the area are Country Dancers of Westchester.

     Also part of the local scene are the Greenwich Morris Men, Ring o' Bells, Half Moon Sword, and the Bouwerie Boys Morris. Here are some additional morris links.

      Half Moon hosts the New York Sword Dance Ale every year over the two days preceding "Washington's Birthday" ("Presidents' Day"). A gallimaufry of gambols featuring ritual dance teams from the far reaches of the civilized world, and California as well!
