Barnes and Nobles is the big bully of the block.  As Tower did to music stores, Barnes and Nobles have done to bookstores.  They have squeezed out the small inde bookstore, but in return offer browsing comfort and a huge selection.  The best thing I think that they return to society though is easy access to a restroom, no purchase required.
