Both the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius and the Bhagavad Gita are books written in times of war. Maybe wisdom is only attainable amid adversity. Or maybe it’s not a form of normal conduct and only stands out in contrast. There’s no need for it in the middle of ordinary, everyday life, as there are no major solutions or faults. Such a life seems wise in its lack of extremes.

From an aesthetic or literary perspective, psychology is downright vulgar. Wise people are above it. Their attributes aren’t personal; they have a kind of omniscience. At most, a mere individual can invent an inner life and make it their primary dilemma.
